Superintendent Update - January 5, 2023

Families & Staff -

I hope everyone was able to take some time during the holiday break to enjoy themselves. It’s good to be back and it’s been a busy week already.

*Budget Committee Budget Cuts

*Remote Learning Days

Budget Committee Budget Cuts

Just before break, the Budget Committee cut approximately $3.2 million from the budget that was approved by the Hudson School Board. This was unexpected. Some of the budgetary cuts were to specific account lines and there was one general budget  cut of $2.7 million.

District administrators and principals spent the last few weeks identifying areas for reduction. The first areas that had budget reductions were vacant teaching positions (even though they are needed).

I am finalizing a memo to the School Board that details the potential budgetary cuts, which will be discussed in Monday night’s school board meeting. It will also be available on our website.

There are still several steps in the budget process before the final vote on Tuesday, March 14.

Thursday, January 12 – Budget Committee Public Hearing

Hudson community members can share feedback with the Budget Committee. The Budget Committee will have a final vote on warrant articles at the end of the hearing.

Saturday, February 11 – School District Deliberative Session

The deliberative session is an opportunity for Hudson’s registered voters to review, discuss and make changes to the proposed warrant articles. The finalized warrant articles will appear on the ballot in March.

Tuesday, March 14 – Election Day – Town and School

Registered voters will decide on local elected officials and budgets for the town and school district.

Remote Learning Days

Making calls for snow days is definitely not a science. The main consideration is whether the roads are safe for students and staff to travel. There are many factors that are part of the decision-making process including speaking with the Department of Public Works, the bus transportation company, surrounding school districts and reviewing multiple weather reports.

Staff in each school are working on schedules if we need a remote learning day. When these are finalized, each school will share them with their families. Please make a plan for your child, just in case we need to have a remote day.

Have a good weekend.
