Elementary Summer Reading Program

Dear Incoming First, Second, Third, Fourth, or Fifth Grade Students and Parents/Guardians:

In support of our district literacy goals, the teachers of the Hudson Elementary Schools are encouraging all
of our students to continue reading over the summer months. Therefore, all elementary students will be
required to read one novel for the upcoming 2010-2011 school year. Each student will be loaned a copy of
the required novel on the last day of school and will return this copy, in the same condition, by Friday,
September 3, 2010. Please be aware that there is a $ 6.00 replacement fee for a lost or damaged
book.

The required novel for each grade is as follows:

(Note: if your child is unable to read the book independently, please read the story to him/her!)

  • Entering K=Summer Reading Log only (sent home via mail with placement)
  • Entering Grade 1=Pig Aplenty, Pigs Galore! by David McPhail
  • Entering Grade 2=Henry and Mudge Get the Cold Shivers by Cynthia Rylant
  • Entering Grade 3=Max Malone Makes a Million by Charlotte Herman
  • Entering Grade 4=Because of Winn Dixie by Kate DeCamillo
  • Entering Grade 5=Frindle by Andrew Clement

Reading is essential in promoting literacy skills, and summer reading will reinforce those skills practiced
throughout the year. Reading serves a variety of purposes:

  • To entertain
  • To develop language skills needed to be a productive member of society
  • To draw on prior knowledge and experience, and to gain new knowledge
  • To understand and respect different perspectives
  • To comprehend and interpret a text
  • To improve vocabulary and writing skills

Grade-level teachers will assess each student's understanding of the required book with an assignment
issued in class during the first week of school. Students are also expected to also keep a summer reading log
(attached).

On a final note, we encourage all of you to visit the local library, join in book discussion groups, and borrow
books for additional pleasure reading during the summer. We look forward to discussing your summer
reading with you in September!

Sincerely,

The Teachers at Library St. School, H.O. Smith School, Nottingham West, and Hills Garrison Schools
