Mediterranean Miniature Donkeys make wonderful pets, companions for other animals such as horses, are used for pleasure driving, for showing, and some work on small farms. Alvirne's donkeys are very friendly and have wonderful dispositions. All have been handled regularly by our students. The older donkeys are halter broken, can lead, stop, back, and stand for examination and for hoof trimming. They are also annually clipped (shaved). The foal (Charlie) is presently being halter broke and is already wonderful with having his feet done. Charlie will be weaned and ready to go by the end of September.
Alvirne's donkeys annually receive a health exam and are kept current in the equine vaccines (Eastern and Western Encephalitis , Rhinotracheitis, Tetanus, Flu, West Nile and Rabies). Their feet are trimmed every 7-8wks. Worming for parasite prevention is done every 7-9 weeks.
The philosophy of Alvirne's Equine Program is to produce donkeys with wonderful dispositions and with sound confirmation. The animals at Alvirne are used to teach our students proper equine husbandry, behavior, training, and veterinary practices to ensure excellent health and well being. Domesticated donkeys may live up to 40 or more years so we will make every effort to ensure a good match between owner and donkey and to place them in loving homes.
